This month the students will be working on becoming more familiar and comfortable in the nursing home, and providing specific care of partial baths, giving a shower, nail care, oral care, transferring with a gait belt, and other skills learned in the classroom. The students will also be able to apply the knowledge gained in the classroom setting to the clinical setting and receive a hands-on experience with the diversity of residents to be cared for in a nursing home/long-term care facility.
The two blocks of Health Occupation students are nervous to the new surroundings, but they are learning the nursing home where the clinical portion of the class is being conducted since Apri 2nd. The first week back from Spring break has been eye opening for the students. The first block students have tested out on feeding already (this skill will be performed everyday the students are at the nursing home as well as taking vital signs). The second block students have learned how to pass fresh water to the residents, and tested out on passive range of motion (range of motion is simply exercising the resident's joints for them). The students also started taking vital signs on the residents which is different then taking vital signs on each other, and this skill will be performed daily.
