Galesburg Area Vocational Center

2014 Student of the Year

5/15/2014

Picture
This year’s GAVC Student of the year is a “very thoughtful, dependable young woman that works extremely hard in the law enforcement class.  She has shown her dedication towards a career in Law Enforcement by completing an additional criminal justice class at Carl Sandburg College in the fall of 2013. ” We are particularly proud of this student because of her involvement in GAVC Law Enforcement and numerous extracurricular activities.

This year’s Galesburg Area Vocational Center Student of the Year Award goes to Megan Ladner of Galesburg High School. Megan plans on pursuing her education at Loyola University with a focus in Law Enforcement. Along with a plaque Megan will receive a $100.00 Target gift card.

Award Winners

5/13/2014

On Monday, May 12, the following awards were awarded

Dave's Auto Body
This $500 scholarship is offered to any senior student who will be continuing their education in a technical field at an accredited institution of higher learning.  The recipient must have a “C” grade point average or better, have an
attendance rate of 90% or better during four years of high school, and submit a written statement as to why they wish to be chosen for the scholarship.  Receiving the Dave’s Auto Body $500 Scholarship is Braden Hagen. Braden will be continuing his education at Parkland College and to major in the Automotive or Diesel
Technology program.

Roy F. Damberg
In recognition of the personal and professional ideals exemplified by Roy F. Damberg, a committee of Galesburg citizens established a scholarship for a GHS graduate.  The recipient must have a “C” average and be in the upper half of the graduating class, exhibit good character and ability in his/her chosen field, attend an accredited
institution of higher learning, have the personal characteristics needed to work well in his/her chosen field, and be considered academically qualified to complete his/her course of study.  This year’s recipient of the Roy F. Damberg Memorial Scholarship of $250 is Savannah Ojeda.  Savannah plans to pursue her education at Illinois State, University of Missouri, or University of Illinois-Champaign in Law Enforcement/Criminal Justice.

Dolores M. Ryner
The next scholarship is given in memory of Dolores M. Ryner, a business teacher at Galesburg High School from 1953 until her retirement in 1981. After she retired, she kept in contact and wanted to know all about the changes in technology that were taking place in the business department.  After Miss Ryner’s death in December of 1996, she made a generous gift to the school district.  That gift was a farm with the annual income to be used for scholarship for a GHS student planning a career in business or business education.  This year’s amount for the scholarship is $2,500. The student awarded this scholarship may renew it for a total of four years by maintaining a 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale.

Miss Ryner spent the greater part of her life helping young people, and through this scholarship, she continues to do so.  It is my pleasure to announce that the Dolores Ryner Scholarship award goes to Matthew Young. Matt plans to attend University of Missouri and major in Business.
