The Culinary Occupation class has been bringing local produce to life: The class is currently using colorful local produce and creating delicious recipes that are flavorful, as well as nutritious!  Some recipes include: Chicken and Zucchini Lasagna, Awesome Apple and Peach Pie-lets, Zucchini Parmesan Chips, Grilled Zucchini Pizzas, Eggplant Parmesan, Baked Banana Pepper Poppers, Bake Zucchini Sticks, Stuffed banana peppers, and many more!

The Law Enforcement class is beginning to work on The Galesburg Signal Codes and Emergency 10-Codes.  Students will be utilizing these codes during the year when we conduct mock traffic stops with the GAVC Law Enforcement squad car.  Students are also preparing to go on their first field trip to the Galesburg Police Department where they will be introduced to the 911 Communications Center, Entry Team Gear, Tour of the Police Department, Holding cells, Report Rooms, and a tour of the New 2013 Ford Intercepter Squad Cars.  They will also get to inspect the 2 Harley Davidson Motorcycles.  Students are also learning about the court system and what happens when an offender gets arrested by the Police.

The Early Childhood Education I class, has been learning about different careers in this childhood education.  They are also learning about the different programs that are offered to parents of pre-school children. These students are gaining knowledge in the characteristics of a successful teacher and can’t wait to go to Bright Futures, where they will gain hands-on experience working with pre-school children.
Fire Science class had a somewhat unique opportunity to observe a fire's growth and behavior without any harm or risk involved! The "burn cell" was created by Galesburg Fire Department members to support an arson investigation class with the side benefit of allowing the GAVC group to experience supporting evidence of the fire behavior chapters of the curriculum. They witnessed the fire starting out small and growing to involve the entire compartment with all the stages of fire development pointed out. One of the interesting points is how the accumulated heat and energy in a structure fire can begin the burning process on articles of furniture and decoration that are not in direct physical contact with the flame. Just a way to show how the study of the sciences and their vocational applications can impact our surroundings and our lives.

The Building Trades class has recently partnered with Knox County Habitat for Humanity to work on two current projects underway in the Galesburg area. Students are learning firsthand how to hang drywall in one home and working on framing and hanging trusses on another home.

The Health Occupations class recently completed the background checks so the students can progress to the clinical portion of the class during second term. In class the students have been learning
about making a bed, moving, lifting, and transferring resident/patient correctly, and how to bathe, brush teeth, shave, give a back rub, and dress someone. The students also began to learn how to take a person's temperature, pulse, respiration, and blood pressure. The next few weeks will concentrate on the different body systems and diseases that occur with each system.
