The Law Enforcement class has been busy, learning the phonetic alphabet and the Galesburg emergency signal codes, along with proper handcuffing techniques. Students have started utilizing the G.A.V.C. squad car, doing traffic stops in the parking lot learning good officer safety techniques and using the phonetic alphabet to run registrations and drivers license checks. On Monday, September 22, Officer Patrick Ruggles from the Galesburg Police Department will visit the classroom to speak about being a new officer for the GPD and the training he has received. On Thursday, September 25, students will tour the GPD and hear from the Entry Team Officers speak about the equipment they use when they conduct search warrants. Students will also get a chance to visit the 911 center, holding cells, report rooms and DUI rooms.
In the Early Childhood Education I classroom, the students are learning about different careers in this area. They are also learning about the different programs that are offered to parents of pre-school children. These students are gaining knowledge in the characteristics of a successful teacher, which they are using when they go into the classrooms of Bright Futures. This term they gain this hands-on experience every Wednesday and Thursday. The GAVC students look forward to this experience every week.
The Early Childhood Education II students are working in 1st and 4th grade classrooms at Gale Elementary School. Under the supervision of Mrs. Saey and Mrs. Green, the students are gaining hands-on experience everyday while they are working with the children. This is very valuable to them because they are thinking about going into the field of education.
