On Saturday April 13, 2013, 4 members of the GAVC Fire Science class gave up their day to participate in a Cadet Field Day sponsored by the Office of the State Fire Marshal funded and organized by the Illinois Fire Service Institute and hosted by the Galesburg Fire Department at the GFD regional training site in Galesburg. Gene Colvin, John Gibbs, Tim Smith and John Winkler all were able to participate with over 40 other participants, ages 15-19 and from a wide geographical area, in the following activities: Self Contained Breathing Apparatus Exercises, Fire Hose Rolling and Deployment, Fire Building Search and Rescue, Ground Ladder Carry and Deployment, Forcible Entry Techniques, and (everyone's favorite!!) Fire Behavior. The Fire Behavior portion allowed the students to be involved in live fire exercise to experience the characteristic and environmental conditions of fire growth and behavior in an enclosed structure. Basically, they were able to see and feel the heat!!!
