The Drafting/CAD class is designing and building a cardboard chair capable of holding the instructors weight for one minute. Each group is given 10 sheets of cardboard and expected to brainstorm 5 possible chairs, choose one as a group, create 2D and 3D drawings, build a small prototype to scale from index cards, print a 3D model, and finally build the chair from the sheets of cardboard. Last year winning group of the competition built a chair capable of holding 550+ pounds of weights. They had to stop adding weights because the tower of weights were leaning and close to falling over. Materials for the build were donated from Rock Tenn. In addition to this project, students in this course also design a green dream home and design and build a full scale trebuchet capable of throwing a softball 100 yards.
