Health Occupations
This course provides a solid foundation for work in the healthcare field. Classroom instruction introduces medical terminology and the concepts of professionalism, confidentiality, medical safety and ethics. During the lab, at local clinical sites and through hands-on experiences, students develop skills in body mechanics, patient assessment, medical asepsis and basic patient care. Upon successful completion of this course, students are expected to take the written examination for Certified Nurse’s Assistant certification (CNA). (The Illinois Department of Public Health requires students to attend 80 hours of theory and 40 hours of clinical class time to be eligible for the CNA certification therefore students not fulfilling the attendance requirement will not be allowed to continue on to the clinical portion of the class.) Students will be responsible for the following expenses: IDPH exam fee, fingerprinting/background check, and a clinical uniform.
This online course is intended to introduce students to basic knowledge of nutritional information. Included
are the basic principles of nutrients, human body requirements, healthy food sources, cultural and social
effects of food choices, and the basics of metabolism.

This online course is an overview of pharmacology and its medications as it pertains to allied health professions. Topics will include principles of drug administration and basic mathematics involved in drug calculations. Throughout the course, the commonly used medications within allied health professions will be explored.

GAVC Medical Assisting & GAVC Medical Assisting Lab: This course provides students with knowledge and skills that combine the medical and clinical field. Students will develop skills such as patient exam preparation, assessment of vital signs, routine lab procedures, medical transcription, financial accounting, patient and insurance company billing, and record-keeping. Additional skills include: handling patient data files and medical histories, sterilizing instruments, preparing patients for examination or treatment, and assisting with patient examinations and treatment under the direction of the professional medical staff. The medical assistant should be able to understand the health problems of patients, ethics and legal issues, human relationships, and interpersonal relationships.
