Auto I & II
Automotive I students have been learning about automotive cooling system fundamentals,
diagnosis & repair. Automotive II students continue to job shadow at Yemm Auto Group & Dave’s Auto Body.
Students in both classes have been busy in the shop, working on customer vehicles and individual projects. Work
continues on the Factory Five Racing Kit Care. Now that the engine has been installed, the wiring harness is in
the care and in the process of being hooked up. Brake and fuel lines are being fabricated and installed as well.
Last week, we had a rear axle donated for the car. It has been disassembled and will be rebuild and prepped for
installation.
Health Occupations
On Friday, January 24, Mrs. Bruington and many of our Health Occupations students attended the SkillsUSA
Healthcare Pathways Career Experience in Peoria. This event connected students with leading healthcare
employers and industry professionals. Students were able to participate in a wide range of hands-on workshops
and activities to gain practical experience in the healthcare industry. Activities included: Surgical Technician
Demonstrations, Respiratory Care Exploration, Nursing & Healthcare Technology Skills, Patient Assessment
Hands-On Experience, and Introduction to Healthcare & Phlebotomy.
GAVC Health Occupations students have been busy gaining valuable hands-on experience
and knowledge to prepare for success in the healthcare field. So far, they’ve explored key topics such as the role
of a nursing assistant in long-term car settings, enhancing effective communication skills, and addressing
common communication challenges. Students have also covered vital areas like safety, body mechanics, and
infection control practices. Students have actively been practicing and refining essential skills, including donning &
doffing PPE, measuring height & weight, and have successfully earned their CPR certification.
Early Childhood I
GAVC Early Childhood Education I are continuing to work in classrooms at various locations across the district. Currently, we have 5 students at Bright Futures, 1 student at Lombard, 1 student at Galesburg Junior High, 4 students at Silas and 9 students at Steele. GAVC students are in classrooms working with students and their cooperating teacher, and will continue to do so for the duration of the semester.
Intro to Teaching
GAVC Introduction to Teaching students have been working to get to know the
“people in the school neighborhood”. Students developed interview questions for a teacher of their choice. They
conducted interviews that that teacher, practiced their workplace skills, and came back to share their experiences.
Students were also able to hear from GJSHS Administration in a town hall type setting during one of their classes.
This event was completely run by the students and they developed the questions to be asked. Students were also
able to interview Support Staff as a part of the assignment. Students then came back together to share
information gathered from all parties. This has allowed for students to have a much clearer understanding of how
all the people in a school work together to make the best educational environment possible.
Firefighting & Rescue:
GAVC Firefighting & Rescue students have been practicing donning & doffing firefighting
gear, as well as working in the classroom learning various aspects of the fire service. These items, in addition to
other labs, are being done in order to meet the time requirements set forth by the Illinois State Fire Marshal.
Several GAVC Firefighting students are also planning to participate in the upcoming SkillsUSA regional and state
championships.
Culinary Occupations:
Culinary Occupations students did a little baking to donate to the Give Back Galesburg
Auction, which took place at the end of January. They were able to dabble a little in the baking and decorating
area of culinary. They made a Chocolate Peanut Butter lovers cake and decorated sugar cookies. The care
auctioned off for over $500, with proceeds benefiting the Give Back Galesburg Organization! Students also just
completed their annual Super Bowl dip sales.
Building Trades
GAVC Building Trades students wrapped up a drywall job shortly before break. Students have
been back in the classroom working on OSHA10 certification in addition to some smaller projects. One of the
projects recently completed was the building of framed walls for our Electrical Trades II class to be able to use for
running wire to outlets, light switches and service boxes. We are looking to work with Habitat for Humanity of
Knox County this spring to assist them in new home construction.
Law Enforcement
GAVC Law Enforcement class just wrapped up their blood evidence lab. Students completed
several experiments to study what crime scene technicians can learn from blood evidence. The class will now be
moving on to learn about how questioned documents are examined. Students will also practice traffic stops and
fingerprinting lab activities.

Firefighting & Rescue: Firefighting and Rescue students have been busy learning about several aspects of the fire service. With the warm weather, students have been outside practicing hands-on activities and labs related to firefighting and rescue. Students are currently learning the principles of using a master stream device to cool a railroad tank car to prevent a potential BLEVE (boiling liquid expanding vapor explosion). Firefighting students also participated in a 2,000 stair climb on September 11 in honor of the first responders who lost their lives in the World Trade Center attacked on September 11, 2001. Automotive I & II: Automotive I students have been learning to use the shop equipment and have begin working on cars over the past couple of weeks. This includes oil changes, as well as brakes and spark plugs. In the classroom, they have finished with basic electrical and electronics. This week they are learning automotive fasteners and automotive service publications. Automotive II students have been job shadowing at Yemm and will be starting at Dave’s Auto Body later this month. They are also busy in the shop doing general repair work including a transmission replacement, brakes and check engine diagnosis. In the classroom, they are studying OBD2 and emission systems, and the computer monitoring of those systems. Work continues on the Factory Five Cobra kit car. Students are preparing for the wiring harness installation. Engine and transmission will be here later this month, and will be installed upon arrival. Law Enforcement: Law Enforcement students are working on criminal laws and their elements by using scenarios. Students will begin Forensics studies with DNA analysis over the next couple weeks. Additionally, students learned and performed Standard Field Sobriety testing. Traffic stops and vehicle search and seizures are activities that will continue throughout the length of the course. Lastly, students are learning how to write police reports and take field notes. Building Trades: Building Trades students are in the middle of a drywall job. Schedule Update
9/10/2021
Due to ongoing safety concerns in an active construction site, we have elected to delay the return to in-person school for all students until Monday, September 20. 2021. Students who are currently receiving in-person instruction will continue to do so. The District has been working closely with Russell Construction to ensure that all students and staff are able to move freely throughout the building during the entire school day. We believe that providing 5 extra days of construction coordination will give us the safest possible learning environment. We understand that this remains an ongoing hardship for our students, staff, and families. We appreciate all the continued support and patience.
